Hitchcock Introduces Daniels Brenner's mother Lydia as well as Suzanne Pleshette as his previous partner Annie, long before the events take place. The suspense is heightened due to Hitchcock making time to establish relationships between the two characters. Jessica Tandy is memorable in the minor role of Brenner's mother, Lydia. Suzanne Pleshette portrays his ex-girlfriend Annie. Evan Hunter (better known as Ed McBain) adapted the screenplay from the Daphne Du Maurier novella. Hitchcock employed electronic sound effects in lieu of musical scores to great effect. A strange real-life attack by sooty shearwaters on Capitola, Calif., in 1961, believed by some to be the result of diatom poisoning of the anchovies eaten by the birds causing extreme aggressiveness, was researched by Hitchcock to prepare for the film.
